Electroplates ELECTROPLATES
Active: 09.2005 - 06.2007
Genres: Freeform / Drum & Bass / Breakbeat Hardcore
Format: 12" Vinyl (LIMITED EDITION)
Owner: Richard Andrews
A&R: Richard Andrews

Electroplates originated in 2005 as a limited edition vinyl label with the aim of allowing Electronica Exposed to release more freeform on vinyl using a non-traditional distribution model including classics such as Carbon Based 'Underworld Species', Re-form 'Schizophrenic', Alek Száhala 'Tigris', Level 13 'Holocaust Of Death', Tracid 'Horatsu', The Acolyte & Shanty 'Party People', Shanty 'Major Paranoia's Suspicion', Pain On Creation & Fea 'Unconsciousness', Shanty, Tazz & Devastate 'DDR', Dodgee '2000 Miles', Lost Soul 'Adversary (Insane Version)' and Lee UHF 'Kickdrum Trip'. The music policy was predominantly freeform, but the label also diversified by releasing a few happy hardcore and breakbeat hardcore compositions.

Each vinyl was pressed with standard Electroplates labels on both sides of the vinyl (apart from when the pressing company did one side only by mistake!) and were packaged in a plain black sleeve with a sticker stating the tracklist and other relevent information. The new distribution model meant that most copies of Electroplates releases were sold directly in Electronica Exposed's web store with a small number of copies sold directly to other stores. The final Electroplates vinyl release was a special edition doublepack to mark the label's tenth release in 2007.

Electroplates released music by a wide range of international artists and the full roster includes Shanty, Carbon Based, DOK, Alek Száhala, Re-form, Level 13, SAINT, Tracid, Tazz, Dodgee, The Acolyte, Amy, Invader, Blakestar, Reese, The Nice Guys, Sean Apollo, Milo, Pain On Creation, Fea, Devastate, Lost Soul, Lee UHF, Effigy, Sano, K Complex, Adaptive and Onslaught! Electroplates was supported by many DJs including Shanty, Proteus, Kevin Energy, Lee UHF, Tazz, E-nrg and DJ Rx!

All Electroplates releases were pressed as limited edition vinyl editions of 150 copies each and are out of print. The entire Electroplates catalogue was released on CD and digital download on Electronica Exposed on:

12.2005 - Review By The Acolyte In M8 Magazine
"Straight out of Finland, Carbon Based unleashes an uplifting freeform offering with 'Underworld Species' marking Electroplates first release. This slab of trancey freeform will take you back to the early days of freeform in the late '90s with its dreamy riffs, energizing percussion and its rolling basslines. 'Underworld Species', filled with loads of filter sweeps is a driving piece of work that moves and flows beautifully and is perfect for any freeform set. If you are a fan of Finnish freeform and their creative use of twisted effects, this is a must for your collection. M6/M8."

05.2005 - Review By Pearsall on onepearsallandhistunes.blogspot.com
"Carbon Based 'Underworld Species'. Epic opening, like the winter sun rising over one of the thousands of Finnish lakes. A slow, stuttering rhythm creaks into action beneath the sweeping pads; the quiet before the storm. Then suddenly that drops out and, unprepared by the calm of before, the kick and twirling bass launch into action. Soon they are joined by an insistent one-note riff, that one ray of light, the tip of a lit cigarette waving in the corner of a dark room. Then a classic spider-riff rifles snarlingly in, leering over the beat with the knowledge that, when if you're there when it's 170 bpm, you are one of the committed. Then, of course, the breakdown, which sees the reprise of the intro, but with the addition of a couple more layers of riffology. The ticking sound of a night winding down, the sound of an early morning, dancing in the rising light, forcing yourself through a wall of exhaustion to keep moving. Epic and beautiful, this track, perhaps more than anything else they've done, expertly balances the light and dark within the Finnish sound. DOK 'Mental Ward (Carbon Based Remix)'. This is where Carbon Based take DOK's darkside freeform classic and strip it down and charge it up, Suomi-style. If the original version was a mean-assed Harley Davidson of a tune, all gutteral roars and thundering engines, this remix is a souped-up Superbike of a tune. A coming-out party for all the little synth tricks they have up their sleeves, this tune is a compilation of some of the most intense digital riffage ever concocted. Furiously unstoppable energy. It fires through the speakers like a missile. Describing it is almost pointless... what more is there to say than that they bettered a classic?"

05.2005 - Review By Pearsall on onepearsallandhistunes.blogspot.com
"Carbon Based 'Painkiller'. Simple DJ mix intro into a gnarly bassline that always makes me think of someone frantically tearing off flower petals. I know I have an overactive imagination, it's just that it sounds like someone is ripping pieces off of it even as you hear it. Sample time ("I was hallucinating, there was a blind spot in my head") then a detuned riff saws through the mix with strange industrial sounds flickering in the background. The whole thing sounds submerged, like a dark room somewhere deep beneath the city, blanketed by smoke and strobes. Breakdown time and the main riff comes in, ultra-insistent, a revolving two-step juggernaut. As it kicks back in it reminds you of those tracks you'd hear late late late at night, mad staring eyes looking out across the mutant aerobics on the dancefloor. Fiercely pummeling sound and energy, the whole thing compressed together like a renegade dark star sucking up light itself. Lacking in a memorable main riff like a lot of hard dance, this simply pummels you into submission."
